Feelings of nostalgia, social alienation, and mechanization led to a greater desire for independent thought and freedom among intellectuals. Industrialization led to an increasingly materialistic society, focused on the financial worth of a person. Paris had experienced monarchy, war, commune, revolution, and republic, with a continued fear of collapse and war. Great political, social, and spiritual instability reigned. Personal history and tradition were destroyed along with the streets and architecture of the old city by Napoleon III.
